Extra-Thick VEGAN Italian Hot Chocolate (VIDEO)
I discovered this lovely drink while in Italy where it is known as cioccolata calda.
Unlike the more familiar kind of hot chocolate, this drink can actually be eaten with a spoon as a warm pudding or simply sipped (alliteration) on like hot milk shake.
It is thickened with corn starch, though you can replace this with rice flour if corn makes you upset.
The non-vegan version of this drink uses milk or cream as its main liquid, whereas I am just using water with a gentle splash of nut-milk added at the end. It’s just as good!
This recipe makes one yummy serving.
1 1/2 cups water
4 tablespoons cocoa powder for a dark chocoalte taste, 2 tablespoons for a lighter milk chocolate taste.
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons corn starch
and your favourite non dairy milk to serve. Coconut and Almond work best I think. Soy makes it taste like yucky tofu that has been sitting in garbage in July.
In a saucepan add the water, cocoa powder, sugar and corn starch and whisk together.
Heat over medium heat and constantly stir. It will thicken before your very eyes!
Pour into a mug and top it off with your favourite non dairy milk. This will help cool it down, and make it creamy dreamy.
